The Two-Week Back-to-School Countdown
Battle River School Division's first day is Monday, August 31, 2026. Two weeks gives families enough time to reset routines without turning the final days of summer into a rush. A small step every day can make the first morning calmer for children and caregivers.
Week one, reset the rhythm
Move bedtime and wake-up time about 15 minutes earlier every day or two. Aim for 9 to 11 hours of sleep for ages 5 to 13, and 8 to 10 hours for ages 14 to 17. Keep a consistent screen-free wind-down, then rehearse one complete morning from getting dressed through leaving the house.
Practise the parts that usually create friction, such as finding socks, opening a backpack, eating breakfast, or remembering a water bottle. A calm rehearsal shows what needs attention while there is still time to adjust.
Week two, prepare the practical details
Check the school welcome letter, calendar, supply list, start time, entrance, transportation plan, hot-lunch details, forms, and fees. Label backpacks, clothing, shoes, and containers. Practise opening lunch containers and water bottles so children can manage them within the time available.
Walk, cycle, or drive the route before the first day. Point out safe crossings and choose a meeting point for an unexpected change. Every child should know their full name, their caregiver's name, and one reliable phone number.
Make lunch safe and realistic
- Follow the school's allergen rules and teach children not to trade food.
- Use an insulated lunch bag and ice pack for meat, eggs, and dairy. A frozen water bottle can help keep food cold.
- Wash produce under running water and clean reusable lunch bags regularly.
- Include water and choose foods children can open and eat in the time available.
Make room for first-day worries
Ask low-pressure questions, listen before solving, and give children time to name what feels uncertain. A classroom map, a school visit, or a clear arrival plan can make the unfamiliar more predictable. If worries continue, contact the teacher, principal, or counsellor early rather than waiting for the concern to grow.
The night-before checklist
- Pack backpacks and lunches.
- Set out clothes and shoes.
- Charge devices and check the weather.
- Keep breakfast simple.
- Leave ten extra minutes for the morning.
Prioritize a calm, predictable first morning over perfection. The goal is to help everyone know what happens next, with enough flexibility for a forgotten pencil or a slower goodbye.
