Renewing an Alberta Driver's Licence at 75+

Turning 75 does not automatically end an Alberta driver's licence. Alberta bases renewal on safe driving, and there is no automatic road test at a particular age. The renewal process does include extra medical reporting at specific ages, so starting early makes the paperwork easier to manage.

    Know the medical-report schedule

For Class 3, 5, 6, or 7 licences, a medical report is required at age 75, again at age 80, and then every two years after 80. When a medical report is required, renewal can be started up to six months before the licence expires.

    Book the examination early

Get the Medical Examination for Motor Vehicle Operators form from a registry agent or medical office. Book the appointment with a Canadian-licensed physician or nurse practitioner. The completed report is valid for six months, so keep the timing in mind when you arrange the registry visit.

Driver medical examinations are not covered by Alberta Health Care. Clinics set their own fees, so ask about the cost when booking. The examination is one part of the renewal review, not a decision that someone must stop driving.

Bring the right paperwork to the registry

Take the completed medical form and current driver's licence to a registry agent. Expect a new photo when the current photo is four or more years old. Keep the detailed medical-examination receipt after paying.

Ask about the seniors savings and reimbursement

The provincial seniors' discount saves $24.50 on a standard operator's-licence application or renewal. Eligible Albertans age 65 and older may also bring a qualifying medical receipt for 25% reimbursement.

For reimbursement, the receipt needs the patient's name, service, date, clinic or physician details, and amount paid. The reimbursement is normally mailed by government cheque within 10 business days. Keep a copy or photograph of the receipt with your renewal notes.

What may happen after the medical review

Alberta Transportation may request another medical or functional assessment, driving lessons, or a medical-fitness road test. The first such road test is free. These requests are part of an individual review and are not triggered automatically for everyone at a particular birthday.

Complete the July 2, 2026 document check

Eligible Alberta driver's licences and identification cards can display a Personal Health Number under the system introduced July 2, 2026. Health Care eligibility must be revalidated during the first renewal under the new system. Ask the registry agent which documents proving legal entitlement and health-card eligibility to bring, because the right documents depend on your situation.

If the licence has already expired

If a licence has been expired for more than six months, additional proof of legal entitlement to be in Canada and Alberta residency is required. Do not drive with an expired licence. Call the registry agent before visiting if you are unsure which documents or steps apply.

    A short renewal checklist

    • Check whether the renewal requires a medical report and begin up to six months early.
    • Get the form, book with a Canadian-licensed physician or nurse practitioner, and confirm the clinic fee.
    • Bring the completed form and current licence to a registry agent.
    • Ask about the $24.50 provincial seniors' discount and the 25% medical-receipt reimbursement.
    • Ask which legal-entitlement and health-card documents are needed for the 2026 check.

Practical takeaway: Start early, keep the detailed medical receipt, and call the registry before visiting. Requirements can depend on the licence class, the renewal date, and your documents.
